📋 PART 7

Time froze. Brenda’s hand was steady, the small silver gun gleaming under the lights as she aimed it directly at my stomach. Hunter stood in front of me like a wall, arms spread wide, his whole body shaking with rage and terror.
“Mom… put it down,” he begged, voice breaking. “This isn’t you. You’re sick. We can get you help.”
Brenda’s eyes were wild but sharp. “Sick? I’m the only one who sees clearly. She took my son, my money, my life. If I can’t have my family back, then neither can she.”
The reporters outside were going crazy, cameras flashing through the windows, live-streaming the entire nightmare to the world. I could hear helicopters now — news choppers circling above the mansion.
Walter slowly reached into his jacket. “Brenda, if you pull that trigger, you’ll lose everything. Including your freedom.”
Rosa’s son suddenly stepped forward, voice trembling. “Mrs. Brenda… I did what you asked. I forged the signature. I leaked the videos. But I never agreed to this. Please… put the gun down.”
Brenda laughed bitterly. “Too late for guilt, boy. You’re in this with me now.”
I felt a sharp cramp in my lower belly — stress, fear, or something worse. My hand instinctively went to my stomach. Hunter noticed and his face turned even paler.
“Jillian?” he whispered, turning just enough to look at me. Tears were in his eyes. “If we don’t make it out of this… I need you to know I believe you. I love you. I love our baby.”
That single sentence gave me strength. I stepped out from behind him, facing Brenda directly.
“You want the money? Take it. Take the houses, the companies, everything. Just leave my family alone.”
Brenda’s finger tightened on the trigger. “Too late for deals, sweetheart.”
Walter moved like lightning — he pulled his own hidden pistol from under the table and fired a warning shot into the ceiling. Plaster rained down. Everyone screamed. Brenda flinched and the gun in her hand went off.
The bullet shattered the window behind me.
Chaos erupted. Security finally rushed in. Reporters screamed. Rosa tackled her own son to the ground to protect him. Hunter threw himself over me, shielding my body with his as we crashed to the floor.
In the madness, I heard Brenda shriek, “This isn’t over! I still have one last card — the real reason Walter never told you the truth about your father, Hunter!”
Then everything went black for a second as the power cut again.
When the lights flickered back on, Brenda was gone — vanished through the broken window like a ghost. The gun lay on the floor. Outside, police sirens were everywhere.
Hunter helped me up, his hands checking me frantically for wounds. “Are you hurt? The baby—”
“I’m okay,” I gasped, but I wasn’t sure. The cramp was still there, sharper now.
Walter stood in the middle of the destruction, looking ten years older. He looked straight at Hunter and said in a broken voice:
“Son… there’s something I should have told you years ago. Brenda isn’t your real mother. And the man who just helped her escape… is your biological father.”
Hunter staggered back like he’d been shot.
My knees buckled.
